Archaeological fieldwork at Agios Nikolaos Pallon, Voula, Attica
The systematic excavation at the site of Agios Nikolaos Pallon in the area of Voula in Attica, run by archaeologists of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports and independent researchers, testifies to continuous activity in this area, from the Classical period up to the Byzantine times. Excavations unearthed part of a burial enclosure dating from the Classical period, houses and kilns dating from late antiquity and the remains of two Byzantine churches. One of the project’s main objectives was the theoretical and practical training of archaeology students from universities in Greece and abroad, who participate in the excavation as volunteers. Support by the A. G. Leventis Foundation offered researchers the opportunity to go beyond the excavation to the compilation and implementation of scientific studies for the conservation and presentation of the ancient remains, working towards the ultimate goal of creating an archaeological park where visitors will learn about local history.
