Project SOS, Elliniki Etairia – Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage

Under the umbrella of Project SOS, and the support of the A. G. Leventis Foundation, Elliniki Etairia (ELLET) has continued to work for the protection of environmentally and culturally significant locations by taking action on local, national and international level. To this end, they have spearheaded the conservation of forested areas under threat from oversights made when creating Forest Maps, preventing deforestation, and responded to the requests of citizens and local organisations when the Venetian olive groves of Preveza, which date back to the 16th century, were considered to become a site for future construction projects. The unique biotope of the Amvrakikos Gulf houses a wide array of marine life and avian species, and ELLET has lent support to the work of the local Managing Authority. The preservation of cultural buildings is as important as the preservation of the environment, and ELLET organised an awareness campaign regarding the palace of Tatoi to help educate individuals and organisations such as the World Monument Fund, based in the USA. While older, significant buildings are protected, offensive new constructions along Schinias beach in Marathon and Linginou beach in Patmos have been removed, and the illegal practice of their building halted.
