Reconstruction of the Temple of Zeus, Nemea
Initiated in early August 2014, the Reconstruction Project of the Nemea Center for Classical Archaeology, University of California, Berkeley, under the direction of Kim Shelton, followed on from the completion of Phase II of the works in Nemea, concluded in December 2012. Work began in two areas: the conservation study of the columns in the pronaos and the restoration of geison blocks from the north-east colonnade. With the support of the A. G. Leventis Foundation, significant progress was made on the pronaos columns, with measurements and planning completed by architect Katerina Sklere and civil engineer Kostas Papantonopoulos. The preliminary results of the study indicate that many of the column blocks and their entablature have shifted significantly from their original positions, the entablature blocks dangerously so. The initial stages of restoration on geison block 288 were completed and included cleaning of the original block, moulding of the missing segments and the preparation of the technical equipment necessary to repair the original pieces and to patch missing areas. Work on both projects continued through the late autumn season, and the third area to which funding will be applied, an exhibit on the Restoration Project, was started in the winter season.
