Establishment of Clinical Trials Unit, Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre, Nicosia

In March 2017, with the support of the A. G. Leventis Foundation, the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre established the Anastasios G. Leventis Clinical Trials Unit – fully equipped to support clinical trials at the Centre and dedicated to the discovery of new, innovative oncological drugs. Unit staff initially included a newly appointed Consultant in Medical Oncology, two experienced research nurses and a dedicated clinical trials pharmacist, with the addition, in 2018, of a specialised clinical trials coordinator. By attracting new oncological clinical trials to the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre and partnering with other cancer research institutions, cancer patients in Cyprus are provided with increased treatment options as part of clinical trials, thus improving their survival rates and quality of life. In 2018, the Anastasios G. Leventis Clinical Trials Unit became an official member of the European Oncodistinct network, led by Jules Bordet Institute in Brussels. In the following year, it established a collaboration with the phase I clinical trials unit in Sourasky Medical Centre in Tel Aviv, also joining the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer in two large pre- clinical translational research projects.
