Bulgarian Icons Exhibition

In 2011, the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki mounted the exhibition ‘Icons from the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast’, prepared in collaboration with the National Gallery of Sofia. The exhibition incorporated wall paintings as well as icons from different museums across Bulgaria. The icons demonstrate the evolution of religious art from the 11th to the 19th centuries, and the strength of Hellenic influences and traditional cultural links with Constantinople. The Foundation’s support enabled the restoration of many of these icons, which was carried out at the workshop of the National Gallery of Sofia and the publication of a catalogue that accompanied the exhibition.
