The PYXIS Intercultural Centre for the Promotion of Refugee - Integration, Greek Council for Refugees, Athens
The Greek Council for Refugees (GCR) is a non-governmental organization founded in 1989 with the mandate to help asylum seekers, refugees and individuals entitled to international protection who were forced to flee their homeland, so that they may build a new, secure life in Greece. GCR offers free-of-charge legal and social services, while special emphasis is placed on vulnerable cases, such as unaccompanied minors and victims of trafficking, amongst others. GCR operates through its three special units: Legal Aid, Social Services and the Refugee Reception and Interpreters Unit. Among the services provided by the Social Unit is the PYXIS Intercultural Centre for the Promotion of Refugee Integration, founded in 1996. Its primary aim is to contribute to the better integration of refugees and asylum seekers into Greek society. With the assistance of the A. G. Leventis Foundation, the highly qualified staff of PYXIS endeavours to facilitate access to the education system, provides free Greek and English language lessons, computer classes and supplementary teaching for pupils attending Greek schools and also organises various cultural, educational, artistic and sporting activities. In 2014 PYXIS served a total of 3073 individuals.
